To register a vehicle as part of establishing your new South Dakota domicile, the following steps are involved:
-
Obtaining a Physical Address: Before registering a vehicle, you need a confirmed address in the new state. This address will be used in the vehicle registration process. SavvyNomad will provide this to you.
-
Complete your SavvyNomad Vehicle Profile: Create a new vehicle within the SavvyNomad customer portal and provide info about your vehicle. If the vehicle was purchased within the last 12 months, you must also provide proof you have paid sales tax on the vehicle and may need to provide dealership details regarding where the vehicle was purchased.
-
Notarize a Power of Attorney document: This allows us at SavvyNomad to complete the vehicle registration on your behalf.
-
Mail Your Title: While you are able to register your vehicle completely online, the title must be mailed to the treasurer’s office in order to register your vehicle. If your vehicle has a lien, we can help you request that your bank mail your title to the county treasurer. The address to mail the title to is:
PO Box 6160 Rapid City, SD 57709
130 Kansas City St Suite 250 Rapid City, SD 57701
-
Email a photo of your South Dakota driver’s license to SavvyNomad: once you get your new driver’s license, simply email a photo of it to support@savvynomad.io.
-
Paying Registration Fees: Pennington county will contact you to pay the required vehicle registration fees, which can vary by the type of vehicle.
-
Receiving Registration and License Plates: Once your application is processed, you will receive your new registration and license plates. These are mailed to your South Dakota address.
