Due to policy changes in the summer of 2023 within South Dakota, you cannot use your South Dakota address for unemployment taxes.
If you do not currently pay unemployment taxes (e.g., 1099 or retired), then South Dakota could work fine for you.
However, if you are a W-2 employee for a company not based in South Dakota, you may bump into issues when your employer attempts to pay unemployment taxes on your behalf.
In this case, we recommend choosing Florida as your state of residence, as it will ensure that you and your employer will not face any issues paying payroll taxes.
